A Glimpse Back in Time

Lou Ann recently discovered this undated photo from a coastal newspaper. I am guessing the picture was taken in the 1940s on Hatteras Island. I thought our readers would enjoy seeing what travel conditions were like on the Outer Banks three quarters of a century ago.

The caption reads, "Every man is a road builder on the Banks. Here the first car off to the ferry in the morning blazes a trail across the beach. Others follow in the tracks he makes."

Our latest Ocracoke Newsletter is Lou Ann's story of the Night Blooming Cereus Cactus. You can read it here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news072111.htm.

    How far we have come!!!!

Great picture and a good reminder that the ferry system and Highway #12 we have today to use are truly a huge convenience, even when weather interupts the ferry schedules or overwash closes Highway #12.

Don't you love vintage photos and postcards!

That's my daddy's car! Well not his actual car, but it sure looks like it .Early 40s I'd say, since he died in 1945. It's great seeing old shots like this!

Clearly, that appears to be a 1934 Ford 5 window with rumble seat-- the Desoto from that era did not feature a spare tire centered as the tag was centered.
